How to Become Debt Free

How to become debt free is a continuation of the Debt Free Plans article. Below are four extra steps that will help you get there and stay there.

Step One

Obtaining a credit report is easy these days. And you can even grab free credit reports once a year free of charge! Go over your reports with a fine tooth comb. If you see any errors you can contact the reporting agency with the facts and if you are in the right, the errors will be fixed.

Step Two

Track all of your money. A good way to do this is via the envelope budget system. If you have to use credit cards, try obtaining a debit card connected with your checking account. That way you won't be tempted to over spend. Writing out your budget and keeping track of it every single month is one of the best ways to keep from over-spending in areas that aren’t a necessity. Save your "wants" and "desires" for a celebration when you are debt-free and able to buy with cash in hand.

Step Three

DON'T get a home equity loan to pay off other debts. This doesn't get rid of debts, it's just moves it from one debt pile into another. Stay on course with steps number one and two and eliminate your debts in this manner. Those home equity loan hypes are tempting and sound good, but turn the other cheek and remember your goal is to get out of debt completely.

Step Four

If you still have trouble with the top six, seek help and advice. Figure out where your trouble stems. Do you gamble? Do you spend excessively on recreational habits such as alcohol and smoking? These things take you time and resources to keep them up, if they are hindering you from getting out of debt, then seek help to alleviate the problem.

If you feel too buried in the debt to even pay double on the smallest payment perhaps you should seek the advice of consumer credit counseling or a debt settlement company. They can help you learn how to become debt free if you have trouble getting started on your own.
