Strategies to Save Money: Debt is Never Hopeless

If you are going to change the spending habits that got you in debt, you must devise some strategies to save money. Or to be more accurate, you must start thinking about your spending habits.
For whatever reason, when we are stressed out over how much we owe, we spend foolishly to sooth our disturbed feelings, when we should be denying ourselves the trivial pleasures in order to pay down our bills.

Some people get so deep in that they feel it is hopeless. There is no such thing as being hopelessly behind. It only becomes hopeless when you give up and quit trying. If you are at the point where your finances seem hopeless to you, then look into free credit card debt counseling first. If that doesn't help, look into debt-settlement (there are some free debt settlement companies out there). As the last resort you can bankrupt (but be aware that you will have to learn about rebuilding credit after bankruptcy) and be back on your feet within 5 years if you will control your spending.

Start cutting your spending by stepping on the scales. If you are overweight, kill two birds with one rock. Quit eating so much and you will lose weight and save money to0. The TV that you turn on just because its there; turn it off unless there is something specific that you really want to see. When you leave a room, turn off the lights. Don't wash a small load of clothes in a super load of water and do it in cold water. How many of those little transformers do you have plugged in? cell phones, ipods, laptops, etc.? They continue to draw electricity whether the device is plugged in or not. Don't eat out, but if you do, order from the dollar menu or the seniors menu.Sometimes, if you have not been active that day, your clothes can be hung up and worn another day instead of washing them as a matter of course.

Reducing your expenses is just a matter of common sense. Look at every single thing you spend and ask yourself if you can do without it. I believe it would be worth doing these things for two or three years to get out of financial trouble and then continue the concept more leniently to stay out. Once out of the hole, save up for the things you want or need. One of the best strategies to save money is to Not borrow money or buy anything that you cannot pay for immediately.

To do this right you should know how to budget, but if you were disciplined enough to create and follow a budget you wouldn't be in trouble anyway. That being said, if you can do without something, don't buy it.
